Children First Zoom Watch Parties

January 21 @ 11:00 am

Children First
Support a Fair and Equitable
Education Funding Formula

TO REGISTER FOR THE UPCOMING ZOOM WATCH PARTIES ON FRIDAYS AT 11 AM EDT, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS LINK.

Pennsylvania has long had inequities in education for its children which has led to egregiously inferior educational opportunities for the poorest children. One of our community, Molly Dougherty, is the grant writer for this organization and has invited and urged us to become involved in this social justice ministry.

For more information about these inequities, click here and read an article in USA Today, click here to read the article published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and click here to read an extensive report by the CEO of Children First.

Now, six school districts are suing Pennsylvania in order to provide a Fair and Equitable Funding Formula for all of its public school districts. Pennsylvania has a $4800 gap between its funding for affluent students and poor students. Much of this gap is related to the lower tax revenue from poorer districts, such as the Philadelphia School District.

The Teen Town Hall on Race shared personal experiences and perspectives on racism and how they have been advocates, activists, and allies in their schools and communities. They were brave and powerful and it was an unforgettable event, as was the song—the hymn, as U.S. Congressman Evans called it—that opened the virtual meeting, “I Still Can’t Breathe” by the Chester Children’s Chorus. The Teen Town Hall on Race (archived on Facebook, with over 4,100 views to date) was also covered by the Pottstown Mercury and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

What can you do to help?

1. Attend one of the rallies in Harrisburg. One is Friday, December 14th. There will be carpools. To attend or for more information, please contact Molly Dougherty.

2. Attend a St. Mary’s Friday watch party of the court proceedings at 11 AM each Friday starting on Friday, November 19th. For more information, contact Deacon Barbara or Brittany Holdahl.
